The camp stands on a forested island in the Jao Reserve, looking out over the Jao Flats. It was rebuilt and reopened in 2019 with five suites and two villas, each with its own plunge pool, connected by raised walkways to a main area with a pool, a gym and the Jao Spa. The camp runs on solar power, and the architecture and art inside are a big part of its appeal.
When the floodwater is high, the days revolve around mokoro trips and boat cruises through the channels, plus seasonal catch-and-release fishing. As the water drops, guided walks and day and night game drives take over. Red lechwe graze the flats near camp, and boat-and-drive outings to Hunda Island reach drier country with more big game. In a Botswana trip, Jao works best as the water camp, paired with a stronger game-drive camp.
Jao suits couples and travelers who want a very comfortable base and time on the water, and keen birders. Travelers who mainly want big cats should pair it with a land camp. Since January 2026, Jao Reserve has handled its own sales instead of Wilderness, with a court case between them still open, so we confirm booking terms directly.
Jao Camp is the flagship of the Jao Reserve, a private concession on the western side of the Okavango Delta. We recommend it for water-based safaris by mokoro and boat, with a high level of comfort, a spa and a gym in camp.
