Jack's Camp

Makgadikgadi Pans

The camp sits among fan palms at the edge of the Makgadikgadi, salt pans left behind by an ancient lake. It was rebuilt and reopened in 2021 with nine large tents, each with a deck, a plunge pool, and indoor and outdoor showers. The 1940s style is part of the appeal: a Persian tea tent, a museum, a library and a pool pavilion.

Activities change with the season. In the dry months, roughly April to October, you can ride quad bikes onto the white salt flats and sleep out under the stars. After the rains, zebra and wildebeest move onto the grasslands and flamingos come to the flooded pans. Year-round, there are meerkat visits, Bushman walks, game drives and night drives. It makes a strong contrast with the Delta in a longer Botswana trip.

Jack's suits travelers who have done a classic safari and want something different, and anyone curious about desert wildlife and San culture. It is not a big-game destination. Lion and elephant are occasional, and the wildlife here is mostly small and desert-adapted. Plan on three nights, since the camp is a flight away from the Delta and the main activities are spread across the day.

Jack's Camp is Natural Selection's camp in a large private concession on the edge of Botswana's Makgadikgadi Pans. We recommend it for the salt pans, habituated meerkats, and walks with Zu/'hoasi Bushman guides.
