Inkaterra La Casona

Plaza Nazarenas, historic center, Cusco

La Casona is a 16th-century colonial manor on Plaza Nazarenas, described by Inkaterra as one of the first Spanish buildings in Cusco. Its grounds were once part of an area where the Inca trained their elite soldiers, and Diego de Almagro and Simón Bolívar are recorded among its early guests. Inkaterra restored it and opened it as a hotel in 2008. Eleven suites surround the central patio, with heated floors, fireplaces and large tubs. It was the first Relais & Châteaux property in Peru.

The Plaza de Armas is a few minutes' walk downhill, and San Blas, the Cathedral and Qorikancha are all within walking distance. At about 3,400 meters, it is wise to come here after a few days in the Sacred Valley. Inkaterra also runs hotels at Machu Picchu Pueblo and elsewhere in Peru, so it combines well with them. Meals are served in the manor's dining room using local produce, and many of Cusco's best restaurants are close by.

This is for travelers who value quiet and privacy over facilities. With only 11 suites, it feels more like a private home than a hotel. There is no large spa or pool, and we found no mention of oxygen-enriched rooms, so travelers sensitive to altitude should plan their acclimatization with care. The small size also means it books up early in high season.

We recommend Inkaterra La Casona for its 11 suites in a restored 16th-century manor house on Plaza Nazarenas, a short walk from the Plaza de Armas. It suits couples and travelers who want a small, private house rather than a big hotel.
