Fairmont Banff Springs

Banff, Alberta, Canada

The Canadian Pacific Railway built the hotel to bring travelers to the Rockies by train, and the current stone building, in Scottish baronial style, took shape in the early 20th century. It is a large hotel, with rooms and suites in many categories, the Willow Stream spa, several restaurants and a golf course designed by Stanley Thompson.

Three ski areas are within reach on one pass: Mt. Norquay, about 10 minutes away, Banff Sunshine, about 20 minutes, and Lake Louise, about 45 minutes. In summer there is hiking, canoeing, golf, and drives along the Icefields Parkway toward Jasper. Calgary airport is about an hour and a half by road.

Banff Springs suits families and first-time visitors who want a grand, historic hotel with a lot on site. It is very large and busy, especially in summer, when tour groups pass through. None of the ski areas are on the doorstep, so you will rely on shuttles or a car.

Fairmont Banff Springs is the castle-like railway hotel above the Bow River in Banff National Park. The Canadian Pacific Railway opened it in 1888, and it is still the landmark of the town.
