Ellerman House

Bantry Bay, Cape Town

Ellerman House was built in 1906 as a private home for shipping magnate Sir John Ellerman, on the slopes of Bantry Bay above the Atlantic. Rooms in the main house face either the ocean or the quiet gardens. Two private villas, Villa One and Villa Two, are built into the granite cliffs. The gardens are planted with indigenous species, and every room has original South African art.

The art collection runs through the whole house and covers major South African artists, and the Wine Gallery holds a cellar of more than 9,500 bottles. Bantry Bay is a short drive from the Sea Point promenade, Clifton beaches and the V&A Waterfront. It makes a calm base for the first nights of a South Africa trip before heading to the Winelands or the bush.

Ellerman suits couples and anyone who likes art and wine and prefers a private house to a big hotel. Friends or families traveling together should look at the villas. It is on a steep residential slope, so you will drive or take a short ride to the beaches and restaurants rather than walk. It is a Relais & Châteaux member.

Ellerman House is an Edwardian mansion in Bantry Bay, high above the Atlantic, with one of South Africa's most important private art collections. We recommend it for travelers who want a small, quiet hotel with great views and serious wine.
