Chamilandu

South Luangwa National Park

Chamilandu stands on stilts under ebony trees on a bend of the Luangwa River. Its three thatched, treehouse-style chalets have large verandahs and en-suite bathrooms with hot and cold water, and the camp takes no more than six guests. Elephants and hippos are often seen on the floodplain in front of camp. Like the other Bushcamp Company camps, it is reached by a slow game drive from Mfuwe Lodge that takes about two hours.

Days mix walking safaris with game drives and sundowners, and a lagoon hide gives a place for quiet watching. Chamilandu is one of six bushcamps The Bushcamp Company runs in its own section of South Luangwa, and guests move between them on what the company calls the Bushcamp Circuit. Walks between camps usually take two to four hours. Most trips start or end at Mfuwe Lodge, so Chamilandu pairs well with a night there and a camp further south.

Chamilandu suits couples and friends traveling together, and with six guests at most it can feel like a private camp. Children need to be 12 or older for the bushcamps and their walking safaris. It is open from 3 June to 1 November. With so few chalets, space is tight in the busy dry-season months, and late October brings serious heat in the valley.

Chamilandu is a tiny bushcamp of three raised, thatched chalets on a bend of the Luangwa River, and we recommend it for its treehouse-style rooms and floodplain views. It suits couples and small groups on The Bushcamp Company circuit who want a simple stay close to the wildlife.
