The estate's core is a castle first recorded in 998, later developed by the Bargagli family and associated with the Viscontis. Belmond runs it today with 39 suites and two signature villas. The grounds include a nature reserve, vineyards and olive groves, a panoramic infinity pool, and the Essere Spa in a former wine cellar.
Siena is about 40 minutes away and Florence about an hour, with San Gimignano and Volterra close by. On the estate there is truffle hunting, wine tasting, tennis and an outdoor cinema, and dinner at Tosca. It makes a strong countryside base between Rome and Florence, or a quieter half of a trip that also includes the coast.
Castello di Casole suits families, multi-generational groups and couples who want space and plenty to do on site. The villas work well for larger parties. It is rural, so you will want a driver or a car for day trips. The hotel is seasonal and closes over the winter, with the current season running to late November.
Castello di Casole is a restored medieval castle at the center of a 3,200-acre estate in the hills west of Siena. It gives you the Tuscan countryside at its best, with vineyards, olive groves and room to spread out.
