Bilimungwe sits in a grove of mahogany trees overlooking a permanent waterhole, a short way from the Luangwa River. Its four reed-and-thatch chalets stand on raised wooden decks, each with an en-suite bathroom with indoor and outdoor showers. Elephants and antelope come to drink at the waterhole within sight of the chalets, so there is plenty to watch between activities. Power is solar, and the chalets have standing fans rather than air conditioning.
Activities include walking safaris and drives by day and night, with sundowners at the river's edge and breakfast at a firepit on the bank. Bilimungwe sits in the middle of The Bushcamp Company circuit, with walks to Chindeni and Kapamba, so it is a natural hinge for a walking trip through the company's camps. The drive from Mfuwe Lodge takes about two and a half to three hours.
Bilimungwe suits couples and friends who want a good balance of walking and watching wildlife from camp, and it is one of the company's most popular bushcamps. Children must be 12 or older. It is open from 15 May to 1 November, and the longer drive from Mfuwe means it works best combined with at least one other bushcamp rather than as a one-night stop.
Bilimungwe looks over a permanent waterhole in a grove of mahogany trees, and we recommend it for the wildlife that comes to drink in front of the chalets. It suits couples and friends who want walking, drives and plenty to watch from camp.
