Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s most physically dramatic safari landscape. Where western Uganda is defined by forests, primates, and layered ecosystems, Murchison is about open space, water, and wildlife density—all shaped by the force of the Nile.

This is Uganda’s most traditional safari environment, but with a scale and energy that set it apart from anywhere else in the country.

The Nile as Architect

At Murchison, the Victoria Nile is not a backdrop—it is the defining force.

The river funnels through a narrow gorge only a few meters wide before plunging into the Murchison Falls, creating one of the most powerful waterfalls on earth. Below the falls, the Nile slows and spreads, forming wildlife-rich floodplains that anchor the park’s best viewing.

This combination of violence and calm shapes everything that lives here.

Wildlife Density and Classic Game Drives

Murchison offers some of the highest wildlife densities in Uganda, particularly north of the Nile.

Game drives here are defined by:

  • Large herds of elephant and buffalo
  • Rothschild’s giraffe moving across open plains
  • Strong lion and leopard presence
  • Wide visibility and long sightlines

Compared to Queen Elizabeth or Kibale, wildlife in Murchison feels concentrated and continuous rather than dispersed across ecosystems.

The Nile Boat Safari: A Front-Row Experience

A boat safari up the Nile toward the falls is one of Uganda’s signature wildlife experiences.

Along the banks you’ll often see:

  • Dense hippo pods
  • Nile crocodiles
  • Elephants and buffalo coming to drink
  • Exceptional birdlife

The boat journey ends beneath the falls themselves, where the river compresses and the sound becomes physical. It is one of the most visceral moments in an Uganda safari.

A Landscape That Attracted Explorers

Murchison’s drama has drawn explorers for over a century. Most famously, Ernest Hemingway crash-landed his plane here in 1954 while flying over the park.

The incident—survived by Hemingway and his wife—has become part of the park’s lore and reinforces the sense that Murchison is a place shaped by force, risk, and scale, not subtlety.

How Murchison Feels Different

What separates Murchison from other Uganda parks is not just wildlife—it’s experience.

Murchison is:

  • Hotter, drier, and more expansive
  • Easier to read visually
  • Less physically demanding than forest parks

After Kibale, Bwindi, or Semliki, Murchison feels like a release—open, grounded, and expansive.

Where to Stay: Wild Africa Safaris Camps

For travelers seeking immersion without excess, Wild Africa Safaris operates the standout camps in Murchison. These camps are situated far away from the main safari circuit (in the north west corner of the park) and the exploratory oil drilling concessions. Instead, these camps are located deep inside the park 20 km east of the falls in an area that they have all to themselves. This means real exclusivity.
