Laikipia Conservancies

The Laikipia Plateau, north of the Aberdares and Mount Kenya, is one of East Africa’s most important conservation success stories. Rather than a single park, Laikipia is a network of private and community conservancies that prioritize coexistence—between wildlife, people, and working landscapes.

This is Kenya at its most intelligent and intentional.

A Different Safari Philosophy

Laikipia was never designed to replicate the Masai Mara. Instead, it evolved around a different question: how can wildlife thrive alongside people, livestock, and land ownership?

The result is a safari experience defined by:

  • Extremely low vehicle density
  • Vast, unfenced landscapes
  • Freedom to walk, track, and explore
  • Deeply embedded conservation programs

Wildlife here behaves differently. Encounters are quieter, less reactive, and often more revealing.

Wildlife: Variety Over Volume

Laikipia supports an exceptional range of species, including:

  • Strong populations of elephant and buffalo
  • Endangered species such as black and white rhino
  • African wild dog and leopard
  • A rich mix of plains game and rare northern species

What Laikipia lacks in sheer density, it makes up for in behavioral richness and the ability to experience wildlife on foot, at night, and far from other vehicles.

Walking, Tracking, and Night Safaris

Laikipia is one of Kenya’s best regions for non-vehicle safari experiences.

Here, guides are encouraged to:

This creates a safari rhythm that is immersive rather than reactive, ideal for travelers who want to understand how ecosystems function.

Where We Like to Stay in Laikipia

Lodge choice in Laikipia defines the experience. We focus on conservancies with strong guiding culture, real conservation impact, and meaningful access to land.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Wildlife density and conservation leadership

Ol Pejeta is East Africa’s most important rhino stronghold and one of the continent’s most impactful private conservancies.

We like Ol Pejeta for:

  • Black and white rhino tracking
  • Strong predator populations
  • Clear, transparent conservation outcomes

Our preferred camp:
Kicheche Laikipia Camp — understated, guiding-driven, and ideally positioned for both vehicle and walking safaris.

Lewa Wildlife Conservancy

Heritage, scale, and elegance

Lewa is one of Kenya’s most established conservancies, combining strong wildlife protection with refined safari experiences.

It offers:

  • Excellent rhino and plains game sightings
  • Beautiful, open landscapes
  • Long-running community partnerships

Our preferred camp:
Lewa Wilderness — classic, elegant, and deeply connected to the conservancy’s conservation mission.

Borana Conservancy

Scale and integration

Borana works seamlessly with Lewa, creating one of Kenya’s largest contiguous protected landscapes.

We use Borana for:

  • Expansive game drives
  • Walking and mountain biking safaris
  • A strong sense of space and freedom

Our preferred camp:
Borana Lodge — refined without being showy, with excellent guiding and access to a vast private landscape.

Il Ngwesi Conservancy

Community-led conservation, done right

Il Ngwesi is a community-owned conservancy that represents one of Kenya’s most successful local conservation models.

This is a powerful addition for travelers interested in:

  • Community-driven wildlife protection
  • Cultural context without performance
  • A more grounded safari experience

Our preferred camp:
Il Ngwesi Lodge — simple, atmospheric, and deeply authentic.

How Laikipia Compares to the Masai Mara

  • Less wildlife density, but more behavioral insight
  • Far fewer vehicles
  • More freedom of movement
  • Stronger conservation narrative

For many travelers, Laikipia becomes the most memorable part of Kenya—not because it overwhelms, but because it explains.

Who Laikipia Is Right For

Ideal for:

  • Repeat safari travelers
  • Guests interested in conservation and coexistence
  • Families and multi-generational groups
  • Travelers who enjoy walking and varied activities

Less ideal for:

  • Travelers focused on migration spectacle
  • Guests seeking constant big-cat sightings
  • Those wanting a purely vehicle-based safari

How We Think About Laikipia

We use Laikipia to add depth and intelligence to a Kenya itinerary.

Paired with the Mara ecosystem, it transforms a trip from a classic safari into a thoughtful exploration of how wildlife survives in the modern world.

For the right traveler, Laikipia doesn’t feel like an alternative—it feels like the point.

Black Rhino

Laikipia is one of East Africa’s most important refuges for rhino, supporting both a recovering population of black rhino and one of Kenya’s strongest concentrations of white rhino within a tightly protected network of private conservancies. Black rhinos here remain elusive, solitary browsers, while white rhinos—larger and more visible—graze openly across Laikipia’s plains, offering a rare contrast between the two species in a single landscape. Long-term security, low visitor density, and active management have allowed both populations to stabilize and grow. For travelers intent on seeing rhino in the wild without crowds, careful timing and camp placement in Laikipia can make the difference between hope and reality.
